Kids that are moving from primary
school to secondary school are bound to have some anxiety about the
transition. Act now have devised a project that addresses fears
and encourages positive behavior and attitudes. |
|
| The basic two hour workshop begins with a 15 minute interactive performance that covers bullying and conflict resolution, discusses topics such as “what is cool?”and highlights the importance of thinking about your actions, not just following the crowd. The rest of the workshop really gets the children involved, with whole group activities and a chance for the kids to perform themselves. | ![]() |

All
of the activities are directed towards developing confidence, commitment
and courage and have been known to engage even the most easily distracted
of pupils. The project can then be taken further to create a performance
with a selection of children from a group of neighboring primary schools,
over the space of two days. We allow the group to explore their own
ideas and guide them to create their own show, which may then be shown
to the rest of the year six classes, teachers and parents. This is a
great way to celebrate the move up to secondary school and a massive
confidence boost for all involved. |

“I said Boom, Boom, Boom, Let Me hear you say Hello!” |
||
Our Fun and interactive assembly
is packed with positive messages and effective ideas. It is designed
to be accessible to all ages and is appropriate for the whole school.
|
||
The performance begins with an
energetic song and rap that immediately engages the pupils, establishing
why we are there. We then go on to give a clear explanation of bullying
involving the children in the action by asking volunteers up onto stage.
The audience then play a guessing game to test that they really listened
to what bullying is. This kind of interaction with the audience and
opportunity for the children to be involved continues throughout the
piece. We also give passionate performances of the emotions
of the characters involved in a bullying situation, allowing the children
to truly empathise rather than just being told about what it feels like.
Other content focuses on thoughts and emotions and
how they affect our behavior. Material is developed from real life accounts
and is designed to provoke a pro-active, assertive response. Music, songs and poems are other devices used to express,
inform and entertain. The piece ends with an inspirational speech and
impressive physical theatre to highlight that when we are positive and
work together we can achieve great things!

To inform children of what bullying
is and also what it is not. To
examine how it feels to be bullied and develop empathy for victims of
bullying. To explore reasons
why bullies may bully and try to understand their feelings too. To
suggest ways we can help to resolve the problem from different perspectives. To encourage confidence
and courage and a positive self image. To
look at differences and similarities, encouraging celebration of diversity
and a sense of unity. To promote an
attitude of forgiveness and inspiring a desire to be forgiven, and a
realisation that we always have the chance to change. To
WOW the children with an entertaining, moving, energetic performance
that will be remembered for the messages it holds. |
||
We also offer an hour long workshop
to support this performance which can be delivered to one or two classes
at a time. This workshop is very active and participatory and includes games with messages, demonstrations, group exercises, drama techniques such as image theatre and a chance for some kids to get up and be involved in performing if they want to. |

Act now offer drama clubs to
primary or secondary schools. Any group we work with we like to treat as a drama
company and concentrate on getting the group to work well together and
raising each individual’s confidence, before aiming towards creating
a small performance. These performances can be shared with the whole
school or just selected friends and family. We can work on long or short term projects, but our availability is limited. |
