Act Now are committed to delivering theatre and drama that involves the local community. The content of our work is always inspired by local people and addresses issues which affect local people directly. We want to appeal to a wider local audience than just those with an interest in theatre and believe that by creating simplistic pieces with focus on energy and emotion we can engage anyone. We present issue based work that challenges and provokes the audience by exposing difficult truths and we are brutally honest about the problem we are attacking. However we don’t merely depress our viewers! We aim to inspire and lead people on a journey towards hope and revelation. Other performances are celebratory and created purely for the audience to enjoy! We hope to involve more local people in our work as we grow. Past projects have included services of local artists, musicians, performers, costume designers, writers and community workers. Our work with young people is predominantly interactive and we believe that by involving young people we can develop their creativity and confidence. We have faith that Hull has hidden talent and we are dedicated to encouraging this City to flourish and manifest it’s true potential!

Because we work closely with the local community our work reflects the challenges, needs, issues or events relevant to the people that live here. This means that there is often demand to create work on similar topics. As a result we are continuously developing material as we learn more about the subject. When we start creating material we will first identify key areas that need to be addressed. We research subjects in different ways. one is by reading locally gathered information provided by the organisations we work with or the local council. We also draw on our own knowledge and experience as we have personal connections to many of the topics we address. We allow opinions, experiences and knowlege of the people we work with to influence the material we create. We deliver workshops on subjects we are passionate about that include dramatic techniques such as Image theatre influenced by Boal. In 2009 we attended the Rainbow of Desires course, ran by Adrian Jackson (director of cardboard citizens) and Julian Boal As we develop a piece we will play with different styles, writing songs, recording voiceovers, creating comedy, choreographing physical pieces, delivering monologues and acting out scenes. when writing scenes that we want to have an impact, we believe that Peripetea (revearsal) is an invaluable tool. In rehearsals we use techniques inspired by Grotowski and Brian Astbury in over-energising pieces to reveal raw and true emotion of the characters we are playing and natural, dynamic movement. Our work as artists is inspired by practioners such as Dario Fo and Athol Fugard in the determination to create work that is relevant and current to our local community. We are two local girls who love theatre, we love to create and perform, but our hearts compel us to create theatre that reveals truth and provokes positive change!
